Gabriel H. de Azuola

Biography

Gabriel H. de Azuola is the present Head of the House of Azuola and of the Solar de Divisa de Azuola, the historical and cultural institution responsible for preserving, researching and representing the documentary, genealogical and heraldic heritage of the Azuola lineage. A consultant, entrepreneur, historical researcher and author, he has devoted a significant part of his work to the recovery, preservation and dissemination of the historical, documentary and heraldic heritage of the House of Azuola.

He received his education in Costa Rica, undertaking studies in the Humanities, Sociology, Philosophy, Communication and Law. His professional career has encompassed strategic consultancy, financial regulation, public affairs and corporate law. He is the founding partner of Cola Blanca Consulting, a firm specialising in legal and strategic advisory services for technology companies, financial institutions and international expansion projects.

In public service, he collaborated with the Senate of Mexico on legislative and public policy matters and served as Executive Director of the Costa Rica Foundation for Sustainable Development, contributing to initiatives in governance, sustainability and international cooperation, including the Sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16).

He has devoted a significant part of his work to historical, genealogical and heraldic research, as well as to the preservation and dissemination of historical and cultural heritage, particularly where it relates to the history of the House of Azuola.

On 1 December 2024, he married Manuela Hawker de Azuola. The family currently resides in the United Kingdom.

In 2025, he legally adopted Azuola as the principal surname of his civil name, thereby restoring the historic maternal surname traditionally associated with the House of Azuola and the lineage from which he descends. This decision reflects the documented historical development of the family. The recorded lineage traces back to Don Andrés de Azula and Doña Domenja, established at Azula Baserria in Elgeta (Gipuzkoa) during the mid-fifteenth century. Their daughter, Doña Catalina de Azula, transmitted the surname of the ancestral house to her descendants through her marriage to Hernando de Egurbide. During the following generations, the family adopted the compound surname Egurbide Azula, as recorded in figures such as Andrés Egurbide Azula, born in 1593, and Nicolás Egurbide Azula, born in 1624. Subsequently, with Don Miguel de Azula Iturriza y Murcia, born circa 1696 and son of Don Luis de Egurbide Azula y Lamarraín (1670–1716), Azula once again became the family's principal surname, thereafter identifying the senior branch of the lineage. This onomastic evolution, rooted in the historic Basque tradition of identifying families with their ancestral house, provides a documented precedent within the genealogy of the House. Since 2025, he has conducted his public, academic and institutional activities under the name Gabriel H. de Azuola, retaining the initial "H." in reference to his paternal surname, Hidalgo.

He is a sixth-generation direct descendant of Luis Eduardo de Azuola y Rocha (1764–1821), Vice President of Gran Colombia and one of the leading figures of the Spanish American independence movement. Inspired by this legacy, he has promoted the recovery and dissemination of his family's historical memory and of its contribution to the public life of the Americas.

As Head of the House of Azuola and of the Solar de Divisa de Azuola, he serves as custodian of its historical, documentary and cultural heritage, promoting initiatives dedicated to preserving and transmitting this legacy to future generations.

He speaks Spanish, English and French.
